Robert L. Haines, age 93 of Clinton, passed away Sunday, February 5, 2017 at Bickford Cottage. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 A.M. on Thursday, February 9, 2017 at Trinity Lutheran Church. Visitation will be from 5:00 to 7:00 P.m. Wednesday at the Pape Funeral Home and from 10:00 A.M. until the funeral time Thursday at the church. Burial will be in Teeds Grove Cemetery. Casket bearers will be Doug and Dan Timmer, Justin Schlader, Doug Haines, Luke Fischer and Dennis DeWeerdt. Robert was born in Chicago on May 11, 1923, the son of Floyd D. and Loretta (Wessels) Haines. He attended Lyons Schools. Robert married Bernetta M. Wall on November 6, 1945 in Clinton. Bernetta passed away on February 28, 2015. He was employed at E.I. DuPont for 35 years and had been a semi driver for Carstensen’s Freight Line. He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church and Amvets Post #28 where he was active in the Color and Honor Guard. Robert served with the U.S. Army Air Corps in the European Theater during W.W. II. He was in the chemical warfare branch of the army, attached to the 384th bomb group in France. He was sent overseas in August of 1943, after previously enlisting in November of 1942 in Clinton. He was inducted into the service at Camp Dodge. Sgt. Haines originally was sent to Scotland and England. Later he was transferred to France, and there his unit received battle stars for the Ardennes and the Ruhr Valley campaigns. He wears the Unit citation and one oak leaf cluster on it, and the Good Conduct medal. Just before returning to the United States, he was engaged in evacuating French refugees from Casablanca, North Africa, to France. He left Europe on October 12, 1945 and five days later was home in Clinton in his civies. He was proud of taking the Honor Flight on September 7, 2010. Robert loved his family and enjoyed attending his grandchildren’s activities. He and his wife enjoyed traveling through-out the U.S. including 27 trips to California. He was an avid Milwaukee and Atlanta Braves fan and also followed the Green Bay Packers and Iowa Hawkeye’s. Robert loved to work on his cars and help other people. Robert is survived by a daughter; Connie Robertson of San Diego; two sons, Gary (Dorinda) Haines of Camanche and Kurt (Kathy) Haines of Clinton; 7 grandchildren; 11 great grandchildren; a brother, John D. (Wilma) Haines of Bettendorf; a sister-in-law, Helen Soenksen of DeWitt and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, a grandson Matthew and a brother, Sheridan “Jerry”. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the Honor Flight of the Quad Cities.
