Ross Elvin Puls, 82, of Buford, Georgia, formerly of Clinton, Iowa, died Thursday, August 17, 2023. He fought bravely and fiercely against aggressive small cell lung cancer, but his battle ended just three weeks after diagnosis, with son Tim and beloved wife Sharon at his side.

Ross was born March 29, 1941, in Mason City, IA, to Elvin Myles and Frances K. (Dawson) Puls. He attended St. Irenaeus grade school and graduated from Clinton High School. After a year in the US Navy, he married Sharon Kay Timmons on July 4, 1961. The couple moved to Longmont CO, where he began a career as a builder and trim carpenter. In 1963 they moved back to Clinton, IA. In 1986, Ross established himself as a successful and highly sought after master craftsman in trim carpentry in Buford, GA. He retired in 2004.

Ross was a member of St. Irenaeus Church in Clinton, IA, and later a member of Prince of Peace Church in Buford, Ga, where he served as an usher for 25 years.

His father, Elvin Puls, nurtured Ross’s lifelong passions for fishing, hunting, and boating, Ross loved pheasant hunting in Iowa and enjoyed countless days fishing on the Mississippi River with his children. In Georgia he loved boating and fishing with friends and family on Lake Lanier. He was also an avid trap shooter, first at the Morrison, Illinois Gun Club, and later at the Cherokee Gun Club in Gainesville GA, where he enjoyed enduring friendships and won many awards during his 30 years of membership.

For the last 13 years of his life, Ross was a loving, deeply devoted caregiver to his wife, Sharon, supporting her battle with two cancer diagnoses. He was with her day and night at MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston TX and in Georgia, drove her to countless appointments, enabling her to participate in three important clinical trials for the treatment of Multiple Myeloma at Emory’s Winship Cancer Center. Their faith in God sustained them through these trying years. And when Ross became so suddenly ill, Sharon came each night to his side and said, “Let’s say our prayer, father, so you can sleep.” And holding hands, they prayed “The Our Father” together.

Ross loved his Scottie dogs, including Max, Riggs, Decker, and Duffy. He is survived by his beloved Duncan, who was his companion for the last six years.

Survivors include his wife of 62 years, Sharon (Timmons) Puls, daughters, Laura (Stan) Brozo of Sweetser, IN., Rhonda (Parker) McCollough of West Lake Hills, TX; and sons, David of Johns Island, SC, and Tim (Judy) of Ellijay, GA. Ross had seven grandchildren, Christopher Brozo, Renee Brozo Clemens, Cory McCollough, James McCollough, Murphy McCollough, Chandler McCollough and Elvin Chateauvert. Ross had 11 great grandchildren. Ross is survied by one brother, Steve (Linda) Puls of Dewitt and two sisters Ruth Ann (Kurt) Dohse of Dewitt and Pat (Gary) of Camanche. He is also survived by nine nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents.

Together in death as in life, a joint memorial mass for Ross and his wife, Sharon (who died four months to the day after Ross) will be held at Prince of Peace Catholic Church in Clinton, IA on Wednesday, April 17, 2024. Visitation will at 10 am at the church, followed by Mass at 11am. A luncheon at the Church will follow a graveside service. All family and friends are asked to come and to share memories of the couple.

Flowers are welcome, but memorials in his honor to the American Cancer Society, Mount Grace Convent of the Holy Spirit Adoration Sisters at 1438 E. Warne Ave. St. Louis, MO 63107 would be especially meaningful to the family. Condolences may be left at www.papefhchapels.com.
