Charles L. Ullrich, age 85, of Clinton, passed away Wednesday, December 12, 2018 at the Alverno Health Care Facility. A private graveside service will be held Monday, December 17, 2018. Charles Ullrich was born in a house on Elvira Road in Clinton, Iowa on August 9, 1933, the son of John and Lena (Manning) Ullrich. He graduated from Clinton schools and attended the University of Iowa for 1 ½ years. He was drafted to serve in the army from 1955-1957 and served in the American Forces Far East Forward, South Korea, 8th army headquarters transportation section in Yongsan Compound, Seoul, South Korea. Charles served for a time on temporary duty in Japan. He then served six years in the inactive reserves. Charles worked at Allied Steel for over 25 years. After Allied closed, he worked at the YMCA for 9 years while also being a self-employed groundskeeper for private individuals.
As a young person, Charles worked long hard hours on the farm with his father and brothers. While being raised on Iowa farm land and enjoying hunting his main interest, along with reading, lie with water activities such as boating, swimming and scuba diving. For many years he was a volunteer scuba diver for the surrounding area assigned to task such as searching for snowmobiles or cars that may have fallen in the water or through the ice, searching for bodies, or items lost in the water. He told of a time when some boats had been stolen from Bulgers Hollow and were sunk by the spillway and he was on the team to retrieve them. When the Interstate 80 Bridge was being built, Charles was hired by McCarthy Contractors to go down in the Mississippi and find tools that had been dropped in.
For many years, his closest companion was his dog, Buddy. He is survived by his nieces, Betheny (Gary) McDaniel, Twyla Lawrence, a friend Allen Hansen and a nephew Jeff Ullrich and their families all of Clinton. Charles was preceded in death by his parents, four brothers, LeRoy, Donald, Elmer and Vernon and one sister, Geraldine Wilson.
