Barbe R. McGee - 65

8/10/1953 - 6/22/2019

Fulton, IL

Barbe Renee McGee, age 65 of Fulton, passed away Saturday, June 22, 2019 at Mercy One in Clinton, Iowa.  A Mass will be celebrated at 10:00 AM on Saturday, June 29, 2019 at Prince of Peace Parish.  Visitation will be from 4:00 to 7:00 PM Friday at the Pape Funeral Home.  Burial will be in the Fulton Township Cemetery.

Barbe was born in Clinton, Iowa on August 10, 1953, the daughter of William and Monica (Slattery) Ries.  She graduated from Clinton High School in 1971 and received a Business Degree from Northeast Missouri State in Kirksville, MO in 1975.  Barbe married Robert McGee on November 11, 1980 at St. Irenaeus Church in Clinton.  She had been a flight attendant with Orzark Airlines, later TWA and for 35 years worked with her husband Robert in his law office.

Barbe was a member of Prince of Peace Parish and most recently served as Co-President of the Curtis Mansion Historical Foundation.  During her tenure on the YWCA Board of Directors, she received a Women of Achievement Award.  She also previously served on the Mercy Hospital Foundation Board and volunteered throughout the years in the Mercy Auxiliary.

Barbe was first and foremost a wonderful mother and wife.  From the moment her eldest granddaughter, Peaches, was born her days were filled with the joy of being a grandparent.  She loved to collect shells on Sanibel Beach with her grandchildren.  Barbe never missed a birthday or holiday and made exceptional effort to see that Christmas was special.  She talked with her sons everyday regardless of where they were.  She enjoyed the times spent with her friends and sharing a bottle of wine.  Barbe was a talented decorator and offered her services to various charitable events.

Most importantly, Barbe fought her final illness with incredible dignity and valor.  She never complained of sickness or why it happened to her.  Even during times of intense struggle, she always put others first.  She lived her final days with dignity and grace.  God gained a beautiful angel.

Barbe is survived by her husband, Bob; 3 sons, Matt (Katie) McGee of Longmont, CO Pat (Helena) McGee of Barcelona, Spain, and John (Angie) McGee of DeWitt; 6 grandchildren, Izabella “Peaches”, Stella, Elin, Jack, Mia baby Matt and a soon to be born granddaughter.  Barbe enjoyed a lifelong and loving relationship with her twin sister, Beth Ryan of San Diego, CA.  She was preceded in death by her parents and her brother Bradley Ries.  A memorial has been established for her grandchildren’s education.

Visitation will be from 4:00 to 7:00 PM Friday at the Pape Funeral Home.

A Mass will be celebrated at 10:00 AM on Saturday, June 29, 2019 at Prince of Peace Parish.

My favorite & lasting picture contains two little princesses coming outside their house together, hands held, looking back and forth to each other, their golden locks spilling freely from under matching bonnets, dressed in matching coats.  It was Barbe & Beth Ries.  I was amazed as I’d never seen twins before. They were magical that first day and have remained so to me personally and my family, the Murphys, ever since.

Barbe always opening her door with her mother’s huge smile in welcome despite showing up unexpectedly.  This so graceful and stylish woman quietly gliding in and out the hotel lobby with a huge platter of food for my mother, Thelma’s funeral.  I remember being so stuck by how she glowed, her swift entrance and exit that I thought surely I had just seen an angel.  Now she is truly an angel with God. She will be missed in so many ways, by so many for so very long.  Sincere condolences to her family and friends!

Dear Bob, Matt, Pat, and John -

We have been gone and just returned, so we found out about your beautiful Mom and loving wife's passing via the newspaper.  I am shocked and saddened by this news.

I remember well working with Barbe on the Mater Dei auctions when we first moved here.  She was full of life, gracious in all her dealings and actions, stylish in everything she touched.  I so enjoyed her zest for life and her quick and quiet ways of getting so much accomplished on every board and committee she worked on.

Pat and Matt, you were both so kind and helpful in getting our girls settled in school and getting involved in the Clinton community.  You are remembered fondly for that by our family and I am certain that was instilled in you by your ever vigilant Momma, who was always ready to give a helping hand.

I feel blessed to have know her and know that she is and will continue to be present to you and your families and children.  Love like hers cannot be silenced!

Deep peace to each of you -

    Gabriela and Louie
