Joan Elizabeth Horner, age 87 of Clinton, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, April 19, 2023 at Park Vista Assisted Living in Camanche, IA. Visitation will be from 9:00 – 11:00 a.m. with the celebratory Mass to follow at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, April 25th at Prince of Peace Parish. Burial will take place at Clinton Lawn Cemetery. Pallbearers will be her surviving brother and her granddaughters. The Pape Funeral Home is assisting the family.
Joan was born in Clinton, IA on July 25, 1935, the daughter of Claude and Rose (Walsh) Holle. She graduated from St. Mary’s High School, class of 1953. Joan married Charles Horner, Sr. on November 27, 1954 at St. Mary’s Church in Clinton. Charles passed away on October 25, 2020.
Joan was employed at Nielsen’s Clearing House, 1st National Bank and Branch Manager of Clinco Credit Union, now known as Ascentra Credit Union. She was an active member of St. Boniface church and later Prince of Peace Parish. She was the bingo treasurer of her church for many years. Joan enjoyed card club with her girlfriends and other couples, bowling, cooking, baking, yard work, and traveling on family vacations. Joan was especially interested in children; her 5 children, 13 grandchildren, and 19 great grandchildren were her pride and joy. She liked to watch and cheer at their various sporting events, often being the loudest voice in the crowd.
As a young girl Joan was very athletic, enjoying swimming, running, and gymnastics. She belonged to Turner Hall where she took lessons in dance, tumbling, and cheerleading. It was there that she met her future husband, Chuck.
Joan’s first job, while in high school was working at Lou Marges, a high end dress shop in downtown Clinton, where she was the owner’s favorite. In 1953, her senior year, Joan was a cheerleader for the St. Mary’s boys’ basketball team when they won the state championship. Joan acted as treasurer for her high school alumni group and helped with class reunions every 5 years.
Joan is survived by her 5 children; Charles Jr. of Jacksonville, FL, Jonelle Kettler of Clinton, Tim (Billie Jo) of Clinton, Suzanne (Joseph) Davidoski of Cincinnati, OH, and Steven of Clinton; 13 grandchildren; 19 great grandchildren, and one remaining sibling, Norman (Margaret) Holle of Clinton.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Charles; three sisters (Mary Humphrey, Margaret Tholen, and Pat VanBuer); six brothers, (Frank, Edward, Richard, Jim, Jerry, and Andy Holle); a daughter in law Katherine Horner; a son in law Richard Kettler and a great grandson, Skylar Horner.
