Evelyn Matje – 88

Evelyn Matje, age 88 of Clinton, passed away Monday, May 15, 2023 at Mercy One Hospital. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM on Saturday, May 20, 2023 at the Pape Funeral Home. Visitation will be from 9:30 AM until the service time Saturday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Oakland Cemetery.
Evelyn was born in Clinton, IA on November 3, 1934, the daughter of Fred and Laura (Holman) Leibert. She attended Fulton Schools. Evelyn married Arnold R. Matje on November 6, 1954 in Clinton. Arnold passed away on August 6, 2022. Evelyn was a homemaker most of her life. She was employed for a few years at the Travelodge and later she and her husband Arnold worked as Relief Managers for Motel 6, which gave them the opportunity to travel through-out the United States, visiting every state but Hawaii. She was a very active member of Christ Episcopal Church where she loved her church family and enjoyed the Bible Study group. Evelyn loved being part of many card clubs, helping her neighbors, and traveling West to visit family.
Evelyn is survived by 3 children; Melanie S. (Matthew) Peterson of Camanche, Michael F. (Karen) Matje of Clinton, and Matthew A. Matje of Clinton; 5 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Arnold, and a sister, Neva Richeson. Memorials may be made to Christ Episcopal Church or the family.
