David Charles Stumbaugh Sr. passed away peacefully on January 20, 2024 in Huntsville, Alabama at the age of 92. A funeral service will be held at Pape Funeral Home in Clinton, Iowa on Tuesday, January 30th at 1:00 PM. Visitation is at noon. Burial will be held at Oakland Cemetery, Clinton. David was born in Clinton, Iowa on October 11, 1931. David was the only son of Minnie and Robert Stumbaugh. David spent his first eighteen years in Clinton, Iowa. Upon graduating from high school, David attended Grinnell College in Iowa where he received a BS degree in Business Administration. David was quite the athlete, playing on both the football and basketball teams at Grinnell.
After graduating from college, David married his college sweetheart Jean and joined the Navy. David served for 22 years in the Navy and retired as a Captain (O6) in 1975. David and Jean were stationed in many locations throughout his career, to include California, Illinois, Hawaii, Maryland, Michigan, and Virginia. While serving in the Navy, David earned a Master of Business Administration and a PhD in Economics from the University of Michigan. Upon his retirement from the Navy, David went to work as a federal government employee, where he worked for the Department of Energy in Washington, D.C. for 20 years and retired in 1995 as a Senior Executive in the Comptroller Office. After this second retirement, never one to be idle, David went to work as a government contractor for 15+ years before he finally and officially retired from the workforce.
David attended Bush Hill United Presbyterian Church in Alexandria, VA for 45 years, where he served as an Elder and the Clerk of Session for several of those years. In his spare time, David enjoyed reading, gardening, travel, and watching and attending sports events. In particular, he was an avid fan of the University of Michigan football team.
David is survived by his children Sandra (Ed) Johnson, David (Tedra) Stumbaugh Jr., Michael (Mary Ann) Stumbaugh, and Jill Stumbaugh Sampson. He also leaves behind six grandchildren and six great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Jean and his daughter, Sharon Stumbaugh.
