Arnold R. Matje, 89 of Clinton, died Saturday, August 6, 2022 at the University of Iowa Hospital. Funeral service will be held at 11:00 AM on Thursday, August 11th at the Pape Funeral Home. Visitation will be from 9:00 AM until the service hour at the funeral home. Burial will be at Oakland Cemetery. Pall bearers will be his grandchildren. Arnold Richard Matje was born in Clinton, IA on May 19, 1933, the son of Carl and Gertrude (Licht) Matje. He graduated from Lyons High School and entered the U.S. Navy where he was medically discharged. Arnold married Evelyn Leibert on November 6, 1954 in Clinton. He worked as a tool-n-die maker at General Electric in Morrison, IL for over 29 years. In the early 1980’s Arnold opened Arnie’s Main Avenue Meats in Lyons, and later traveled the United States with Evelyn as Relief Managers for Motel 6. He got his pilot license where he enjoyed flying a Cessna Plane and also enjoyed hunting and fishing. Arnold was a member of Christ Episcopal Church and the Moose Lodge.

Arnold is survived by his wife Evelyn; three children, Melanie (Matthew) Peterson of Camanche, Michael (Karen) Matje and Matthew Matje, both of Clinton; five grandchildren; 11 great grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and three brothers. Memorials may be made to Christ Episcopal Church or the family.
