Thomas Frederick O’Connor passed away on December 19, 2024 in Alexandria, Virginia after a brief illness. He was born in Clinton County, Iowa on May 16, 1940 to Charles Leo O’Connor and Mary Margaret Mussmann and grew up on several farms in the rural part of that county. He attended St. Joseph’s Catholic High School in DeWitt, graduated from St. Ambrose in Davenport and went on to work as an auditor at the International Division of the U.S. General Accounting office in Washington, D.C. He later earned a Masters degree in Public Administration from the University of Oklahoma and became a CPA. Near the end of his government career, he worked for the Agency for International Development and after retirement did consulting and training for Management Concepts. He lived for two years in Frankfurt Germany after his marriage to Joyce Ann McAndrews on December 28, 1968 at Sacred Heart Church in Lost Nation, Iowa. The marriage produced two sons, Brian and Mark. He was divorced on August 19, 1982 and later married Gail Elizabeth Evans on September 4, 1993. They were divorced on December 6, 2021. He resided in Chicago after graduating from college, moving to Annandale, Virginia and later Alexandria, Virginia in the 1990s where he remained until his death.
Tom was a generous, kind, warm, good-hearted person. He was also a world traveler and would love to regale friends and family with his many stories of his oversea adventures. He travelled to over 70 countries during the course of his life including Germany, Spain, Greece, Malta, Afghanistan, Nepal, New Zealand, Djibouti, Egypt, Thailand, Bali and many more. He loved telling jokes and making people laugh, even into his elder years. He doted on his nieces and nephews and was very fond of children with a gift for making them laugh, as he was truly a child at heart his whole life. He gave generously to his family members and many charities throughout his life, and he had a strong Catholic faith.
He is survived by two sons, Mark and Brian O’Connor and three sisters, Dolores Angerer of Davenport, Theresa Bruggemann of Dubuque, and Alice Green of Cedar Rapids. He was predeceased by one brother, Robert O’Connor.
