Harlan E. Marx, age 88 of Clinton, passed away Saturday, December 3, 2022 at home with his family. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 am on Saturday, December 10, 2022 at the First Presbyterian Church in Clinton. Visitation will be from 4:00 to 7:00 pm Friday at the Pape Funeral Home and from 10:00 am until the service time Saturday at the church. Burial will be in Oakland Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Kenny and Russell Grimm, Rick Ryan, Aaron Marx, Jerry Rickertsen, and Russell Wheatly. Honorary pallbearers will be Dick Evers, Keith Jensen, Ron Suntken, Doug Bergert, Bill Buech, and Floyd Marx.
Harlan was born in Clinton on May 8, 1934, the son of Arthur and Anna (Tietjens) Marx. He graduated from Miles High School in 1952. He joined the Iowa National Guard in 1953, serving for 8 years. Harlan married Carol Sutthoff on December 2, 1956 at First Presbyterian Church in Clinton. Harlan was a life-long farmer, and in his younger years, he raised and showed Angus cattle.
Harlan was a member of the First Presbyterian Church and served as a deacon for many years. He was a past member of the Andover Lions Club and Andover Volunteer Fire Department. He was a 4-H leader of Elk River Jr. Feeders for many years. Harlan and Carol were members of the Iowa Polka Club, dancing in Iowa, Wisconsin, and McAllen, Texas, where they wintered for 28 years.
Harlan is survived by his wife Carol of 66 years; 3 children, Debra (Chet) Hippler of Clinton, David (Kathy) Marx of Clinton, and Daniel (Sheryel) Marx of Newton, IA; 4 grandchildren, Carissa and Dalton Marx, and Heather and Shayla Hippler; 3 great grandchildren, Tripp, Chance, and Averee and many nieces, nephews and great nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Arthur Marx of Bryant. Memorials may be made to the Andover Fire and Ambulance or the First Presbyterian Church.
