Janet Mary Peters, age 82, of Clinton, IA passed away Monday Oct. 5, 2026 at Addington Place of Clinton following an extended battle with Alzheimer’s Disease. Funeral services will be held Thursday 10:30 a.m. at St. John Lutheran Church, Clinton. Visitation will be Wednesday 4:00 – 7:00 p.m. at the Pape Funeral Home and Thursday at the church from 9:30 a.m. until the services begin. Burial will be at Oakland Cemetery. Pall bearers will be her nephews: Tim Larsen, Mitch Reinken, Alex Blizzard, Tom Torode, Bobby Wenman, and Johnny Wright. Honorary pallbearers will be Don Peters and Bryce Petersen. Janet was born on October 16, 1943 in Clinton, IA the daughter of Elmer and Anetta (Mielk) Peters. She was an Elementary School Teacher at Northeast Schools for over 39 years. Janet enjoyed reading to children and sharing her love of books. As a lifelong member of St. John Lutheran Church, she found joy serving in Ladies Aid, Altar Guild, LWML, and Mary Martha. Always with a smile on her face, Janet loved visiting friends and family, attending Peters’ First Friday cousins gatherings, playing cards, and antiquing. In her retirement, Janet was a MercyOne volunteer, clocking more than 2000 hours. Additionally, Janet had a special place in her heart for the University of Iowa Stead Family Children’s Hospital for whom she collected donations for years.
In her honor, beginning with the class of 2027, the Janet Mary Peters Memorial Scholarship will be open for graduating seniors from Northeast Community High School who intend to pursue a degree in elementary education.
Janet is survived by her sister, Barbara Tietjens of Clinton, IA; four nieces, Ann (Juanita) Tietjens of Normal, IL, Julie (Tim) Larsen of Moline, IL, Ronna Braaten of Bettendorf, IA, and Joleen Wright of Charlotte, IA; several great nieces and nephews and six great-great nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; her brother-in-law, Ben “Jack” Tietjens; and two nephews, Aaron Braaten and John Wright.
Memorials may be given to St. John Lutheran Church or the University of Iowa Stead Family Children’s Hospital.
