Steven E. Mayer age 78 of Clinton, IA passed away Thursday Sept. 21, 2023 at his home following a brief illness and surrounded by his wife and three daughters. Visitation will be held Sunday Sept. 24th from 2:00 – 5:00 PM at the Pape Funeral Home. A private family graveside service will be held Monday at Oakland Cemetery.

Steven E. Mayer was born April 4, 1945 at Schick Army Hospital, Clinton, Iowa to E. Stanley Mayer and Hazel Delahooke Mayer. He married Kathryn (Kit) Elizabeth Meisenbach in Iowa City on August 29, 1970. He graduated from Clinton High School in 1963, received a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Iowa in 1967, and a J.D. degree with honors from Drake University in 1974. Steve served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War from 1968-1970 and was honorably discharged as a Sergeant in the Medical Corps. He was an expert marksman and received the national defense and good conduct ribbons.
He practiced law for many years in Clinton and later worked as a broker in the metal recycling business. He served on several boards of directors, including Clinton Humane Society, Clinton Federal Savings, Skyline Center (Past President), Clinton Mutual Plate Glass, and Fulton Country Club. He was also a member of the Big 10 Mart Coffee Club. He enjoyed vacationing with his family, boating, fishing with his friends, skiing, and golf. Steve was also fortunate to have many dear friends and cousins with whom he was close. He was an AWFULGUY and a Hawkeye fan from birth until death. His fellow AWFULGUYS were his best friends forever.
Steve is survived by his wife, Kathryn. They were blessed with three daughters, Rebecca Ann Mayer (Doug Easton) of Denver, CO, Carrie Ragan Donaire (Carlos) of Clinton, IA and Jessica Kathryn Raun (Tyler) of Coralville, IA. Steve was proud to be Umpa to Joaquin, Diego, and Jens. Steve was preceded in death by his parents.
