Shirley M. Reed age 93 of Clinton, passed away Thursday, August 15, 2024 at The Alverno. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM on Monday, August 19, 2024 at the Pape Funeral Home. Visitation will be from 10:00 AM until the service time Monday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Clinton Lawn Cemetery. Honorary pallbearers are Scott Reed, Bob Schumake, Rob Schumake, Dan Schumake, Ron Reichwein, and Don Reichwein, and Paula L Mayer.
Shirley was born in Clinton on July 26, 1931, the daughter of Robert F. and Henrietta S. (Hansen) Shumake. She attended Lyons Schools. Shirley married Marion Alvin (Al) Henry on March 13, 1948. They divorced in 1955. On July 26, 1969 Shirley became a wife, mother, and grandmother when she married James K. Reed who had a son, Kenneth and a grandson Scott. Jim passed away on July 26, 1979, just 10 years to the day from their wedding. Both occurred on Shirley’s birthday. Shirley had been employed at Grant’s on 5th Ave. South and later in the office of Montgomery Wards until it closed. Following Jim’s death Shirley owned and operated the Library Pawn Shop for over 30 years. Shirley was a member of Zion Lutheran Church. She was a strong supporter of the Clinton Humane Society. She enjoyed boating, traveling, and cooking. She had a love of antiques and collectibles.
Shirley is survived by a step-son Kenneth Reed of Des Moines; a step-grandson, Scott; a step-great-grandson Zach; 3 nieces, Verna Rowson of Clinton, Sheryl Ringen of Muscatine, and Judy Ehresmann of Olympia, WA and 3 nephews, Ron Reichwein of Virginia, Don Reichwein of Florida, and Robert Shumake of Clinton. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; a sister, Esther; a brother, Robert, and a nephew, Tom Reichwein. Memorials in Shirley’s name may be made to the Clinton Humane Society.
