Richard W. “Dick” Thoms, age 92 of Clinton, passed away Monday, February 27, 2023 at Bickford Cottage. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 AM on Saturday, March 4, 2023 at Lyons/Trinity Methodist Church. Visitation will be from 4:00 to 7:00 PM Friday at the Pape Funeral Home and from 9:30 AM until the service time Saturday at the church. Burial will be at Clinton Lawn Cemetery.
Dick was born in Clinton on August 25, 1930, the son of Arthur and Leone (Jackson) Thoms. He graduated from Lyons High School where he lettered in basketball, track, and football, as well as being Captain of the football team. Dick was proud of his family’s military background and proudly served with the U.S. Army, Military Police, during the Korean War. His father, five brothers, and two sons also served in various branches of the military. After his military service he attended Clinton Community College. Dick married Jane Mohrman on January 3, 1953 in Omaha, NE. They were married 66 years when Jane passed away on September 20, 2019. With 34 years of service, Dick retired from the Clinton Police Department as a Captain in 1987. He then worked for the Clinton County Sherriff’s Department for 18 years.
Dick was a member and active volunteer of Lyons/Trinity Methodist Church, a member of the Fulton Country Club where he had a hole-in-one, the former Odeon Club, Eagle’s Club, American Legion Post 190 where he served as Sergeant of Arms, and the AMVETS. He was proud to have taken the 32nd Honor Flight to Washington, DC. Dick enjoyed golfing and bowling and was an avid Chicago White Sox fan.
Dick is survived by four children; Michael (Judith) Thoms of Estill Springs, TN, Barbara (Curt)Parrott of Urbandale, IA, Connie (Pete) Brunson of Blue Grass, IA and Mark (Andrea) Thoms of Camanche; 13 grandchildren; Kevin, Matthew, and Kenny Thoms, Carson and Kyle Walker, Chelsea Schroeder and Bryson Peters, Justin, Nathan, Nick, and Nolan Thoms, Sean Leeper, and Lindsey Brown; 20 great grandchildren; a brother William (Marlene) Thoms of Greenwood, MO, sisters-in-law, Jan Mohrman of Grayson, KY, Lynn Thoms of Clinton, and Lou Ann Thoms of Topeka, KS, and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; infant daughter Frances; a sister Betty Kratz; and four brothers, Robert, Donald, Jack, and Gary.
