Growing up I used to ask my dad, “what should I be when I grow up?” His answer was always the same, a writer. And so, it is with great honor I write these words to tell the story of Michael Lorenzen, a loving tribute to a life that touched many.
Michael D. Lorenzen was born in Clinton, Iowa on July 17th, 1949. He was the oldest son of Richard and Marilyn Lorenzen and spent his youth going on adventures with his family and friends in South Clinton. Michael developed deep friendships while working at the CNW Railroad and later retiring from Alliant Energy. Throughout his life, Michael was avid sports fan, athlete, and hunter. Whether it was playing slow pitch softball, swinging a golf club, watching a Lumberkings game, coaching baseball and softball, sitting in a duck blind, fishing, talking about boxing, attending his grandkids sporting events, or cheering on his beloved Philadelphia Eagles, he was surrounded by people he loved. In addition to his love of sports, he found great joy in reading, history or watching a good movie. But of all his interests, his true joy in life was always his family.
Michael was married to Louise A. (Mueller) on March 27, 1971. Together they were blessed with three children & 7 grandchildren. Son, Matthew Lorenzen of Clinton, (wife Julie Lorenzen) and grandkids Carson, Logan and Addison. Daughter Jessica Wright of Lowden, IA (Husband Eric) and grandkids Emily and Owen. And daughter Rachel Lorenzen of Clinton and grandkids Sophia & Cameron. In addition to his wife and children, Michael had a large family of sisters, brother, sister in-laws, brother in laws, nieces and nephews, cousins, and aunts and uncles that he frequently spent time with.
As the final chapter of life closed for Michael on Monday, July 1st he was surrounded by his family. Throughout his life, he touched the hearts of many, leaving behind countless stories and cherished memories that friends and family will share for years to come. His story lives on in the adventures and tales that paint a vivid picture of a life well-lived. Each story is like a chapter in a vast, unwritten book, capturing moments of his kindness, humor, wisdom, and the joy he brought to those around him. Just as every good book leaves a lasting mark on its readers, his life has left an enduring impression on all who knew him; his story will never be forgotten.
*Memorials will directed to the wishes of the family* In lieu of flowers.
Coach Lorenzen was a man that taught his players the value of hard work, dedication, and good Sportsmanship. He coached the Oriole baseball team for many years and always looked out for his players and made sure we understood respect for each other. He and his whole family were great. I wish I could thank him for all the time he spent with my brother and I teaching us about baseball. My prayers are with his family and friends.
My deepest sympathies to Louise and the family. I was a bartender at Legends when I met Mike. He was one of the nicest people to talk to. He was always betting with me whenever his Eagles played my Vikings. Even though I always knew his Eagles would win, I still bet with him. Once in awhile I got lucky and won a beer. He was always asking about my husband who had a lot of the knee issues as he did. So kind, I will miss him!
Our heartfelt sympathies to Louise and families. Throughout the years, Mike became one of my best friends. His uncanny sense of humor and his very quick wit made me love to hang around with him. He was a blast to be around and a great friend. Sure, we jabbed each other about his Eagles and my Cowboys, but it was all in good fun – most of the time. Lol
Mike gave me the nickname, FrankenJungen and I gave him the nickname of Lumpy ~ people at work and relate to that – all in good fun. I already miss my pal and think about him a lot. Thank you, Mike, for being such a good friend over the years and with God’s help we will meet again. Your good friends, Gary (and Karen)

We were so lucky to have worked with Mike at Alliant. His humor, wit, and kindness will never be forgotten. We’ll also never forget “Hollywood”, as he liked to call himself.
