Maudie E. Stoltenberg, age 88 of Clinton, passed away Thursday, July 13, 2023 at Mercy One Hospital. A funeral service will be held at Christ Episcopal Church on Thursday, July 20, 2023 at 10:30 AM. Visitation will be from 4-7 PM on Wednesday, July 19th at the Pape Funeral Home and also 9:30 AM until the service hour on Thursday at the church. Burial will be at Oakland Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Tom Brown, Dave Gilbert, Randy Gilbert, Walter Metzger, Bob Burkett, and Mike Rastrelli. Online condolences may be left at www.papefh.com.
Maudie Ellen Phelan was born June 12, 1935 in Keota, Oklahoma to Iris Darcy Phelan and Frank Phelan. Her family moved several times, ending up in Lyons. Maudie graduated from Lyons High School in 1954. She met Charles W. Stoltenberg at Rastrelli’s and married him on July 2nd, 1955 in Clinton. Maudie was employed as a secretary to the superintendent with the Clinton Community School District, retiring in 1997. Through her career, Maudie met and helped many people. She was an exemplary employee, and her love of people was her biggest asset.
Maudie was a member of Christ Episcopal Church, P.E.O. Chapter JW, and the Clinton Women’s Club. She was the membership secretary for the Clinton Art Association, and a volunteer for the Mercy Hospital Auxiliary.
Maudie was a joyful mother, sister, and friend. She is survived by her son, William Stoltenberg (Denise) of Leesburg, FL, and daughters Christi Ellwood (Don) of Libby, MT, and Susan Carleton of Clinton, IA; grandchildren Emily Ellwood of Aurora, CO, Jim Ellwood (Libby) of Bozeman, MT, Charles D. Stoltenberg (Kate) of Lawrence, KS, Sarah Knox of Las Vegas, NV, and Noah Clough of Houston, TX; and 5 great grandchildren, Madison, Henry, Eleanor, Elise, Vivian and a great grandson on the way; sisters Bertie Tilberg of Joplin, MO, Geneva Montgomery of East Dubuque, IL, Eva Alley of Lawrence, KS, and Bonnie Holle of Rolla, MO; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles, her parents, and sisters Jan Phelan and Amy Heavin. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Christ Episcopal Church.
