Gerald was born on Aug. 16, 1938 in Bellevue, IA the son of James Clifford and Mavis (Reed) Grant. He graduated from Preston High School in 1955 and was one of the founding officers of the original Preston FFA Chapter. His children and grandchildren continued his legacy and were participants in several state and national FFA contests. He was also a veteran of the Army National Guard, serving for 7 years. Gerald met his future wife on a blind date set up by friends, little did he know they would be married for 61 years. On Dec 22, 1960, Gerald married Marvel Kroymann in Clinton, IA and followed it up with a trip to the Rose Bowl. He spent the best years of his life farming with his family on their century farm east of Preston. The farm originally raised purebred Poland China pigs and dairy cattle. Eventually it transitioned to beef cattle and commercial hog production. Over the years, Gerald was a 4-H Leader, member of the 4-H Food Committee, and served as the official taste tester of his wife’s and grandchildren’s baking projects. He also served as a board member for the Jackson County Farm Bureau. He helped organize the Livestock Feeders, which eventually turned into the Jackson County Cattleman Association and the Jackson County Pork Producer Association.
Off the farm, Gerald was known for his dancing and singing abilities. He and Marvel served as co-Presidents of the Preston Town-n-Country Square Dance Club for several years and helped with the National Square Dance Convention in Des Moines. Gerald was a member of St. John Lutheran Church in Preston and at times served as a council member. He served on the Preston Community School Board for 9 years and the Preston Athletics Booster Club. Gerald and Marvel always traveled to support their children and grandchildren’s school and sporting events. He was a big fan of the ISU Cyclones and witnessed one son and three grandchildren graduate with agriculture degrees.
Gerald is survived by his wife, Marvel Grant of Preston, IA; three sons, Clifford (Carolyn) Grant of Miles, IA, Greg Grant of Preston, IA, and Gene (ReNee) Grant of Preston, IA; seven grandchildren, John (Manda) Grant of Miles, IA, Neal (Lydia) Grant of Monticello, IA, Erin (Kyle) Assenmacher of DeWitt, IA, Marta Grant of Austin, TX, Devin (Brandon) Dierks of Fulton, IL, Demi (Austin) Peters of Clinton, IA, and Isabel (Alex) Wherry of Fulton, IL; and nine great grandchildren.
