Donald D. “Gus” Flood, age 88 of Clinton, passed away Monday, August 29, 2022 surrounded by his family. A Mass will be celebrated at 10:30 AM on Thursday, September 1, 2022 at Prince of Peace Parish. Visitation will be from 9:00 AM until the service time Thursday at the church. Burial will be in St. Irenaeus Calvary Cemetery. Pallbearers will be his grandchildren. The Pape Funeral Home is assisting the family.
Don was born in Clinton on July 7, 1934, the son of John and Margaret (Campie) Flood. He graduated from Clinton High School in 1952. He served with the U.S. Navy during the Korean War. He attended the FBI Academy. Don married Barbara Sanderson on August 31, 1957 at St. Mary’s Church in Clinton. Don served with the Clinton Police Department for 32 years, retiring as Captain in 1988. He then served 17 years with the Clinton County Sheriff’s Department, retiring in 2005. He helped start the domestic violence women’s shelter at the YWCA and was very active with the Boy Scouts and was very proud of the scouts who earned their Eagle badge. Don was a member of Prince of Peace Parish and the former St. Irenaeus Church where he served as lector and was active with the Wednesday night building and Jackson Center Committees. Don served as the Airport Commissioner at the Clinton Airport where he received his pilot’s license. He enjoyed going to his kids and grandkids school and sporting events.
Don is survived by his wife Barbara; 5 children, John Flood (fiancé Marlissa White) of Chicago, Mary (Steve) Drury of Clinton, Joseph (Renee) Flood of Clinton, James (Abbie) Flood of Clinton, and Melissa (William) Russell of West Branch; Julianne Flood of South Beloit, IL; 16 grandchildren; 9 great grandchildren; a brother, Marvin Flood of Washington, DC; several nieces and nephews, including Ed and Al Sanderson and his extended family sisters, the Glunz girls, LeMay, Jan, Mary, Joy, and Diane and their spouses. He was preceded in death by his parents; an infant brother; a sister, Peggy, and his in-laws, Von and Bud Sanderson. Memorials may be made to Prince of Peace Parish or the Sisters of St. Francis.
