Bernard G. “Bernie” Adkins, age 78 of Clinton, passed away Friday, January 29, 2021 surrounded by his family at the Clarissa Cook Hospice House in Bettendorf. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM on Thursday, February 4th at the Pape Funeral Home. Visitation will be from 4:00 to 7:00 PM Wednesday at the funeral home. Cremation rites will follow the services with burial at a later date.
Bernie was born in Kimberly, West Virginia on July 14, 1942, the son of Leonard R. and Opal N. (Stowers) Adkins. He graduated from Clinton High School in 1960. He married Emma Morrissey Holcomb on October 23, 1970 in Morrison, IL. Bernie had worked at Dairy Pac and E.I. DuPont from where he retired after 38 years. He was a member of the Eagles Club. Following his grandkids in all their activities would bring a smile to Bernie. He enjoyed golfing, bowling, and playing softball. He played fast pitch for the Lyons Merchants and for many years slow pitch for Helen’s Tap, winning two state championships. He loved his moonshine and followed the Minnesota Vikings, LA Dodgers, and the Hawkeyes.
Bernie is survived by his wife Emma; 8 children, Lynn (David “Chip”) Hamilton of Fulton, Bernard “John” (Penny) Toureen of Mackinaw, IL, David (Laura) Toureen of Fulton, Shelley (Paul) McClusky of Davenport, Tonia Edens of Clinton, John Adkins of Omaha, NE, Darla (Brent) Lamp of Clinton, and Leslie Adkins of Clinton; 16 grandchildren; 10 great grandchildren; 2 brothers, Roger (Constance) Adkins and Gary (Cathie) Adkins both of Clinton; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Arby; and 4 sisters, Naomi, Ludena, Bertie, and Arnie. Memorials may be made to the Clarissa Cook Hospice House. He was always was nice. When I was in grade school I ask him to help Me with my math he got my paper and did it all for me.It was all done so neat I said, ” Bernard my teacher will know I didn’t do this.” He just grined at me.Love from your WV cousin ,EVY My Mom and His Dad were Brother and Sister.
So sorry to hear about Bernie. My thoughts and prayers go out to his family. Good times years ago when we went to Wi to watch the Hawks play with Roger and Dad. Rest in peace.
So sorry to hear of Bernie passing. He was a good guy always willing to take the time to visit whenever you would see him out and about he will be sadly missed. My condolences to the family.

I am so saddened by the news about Bernie. DuPont and many years of softball with Gary Roger and Bernie. I wish to express condolences to the entire family. He was such a great guy. I could go on forever. Sadly missed already. RIP my friend.
