Helen E. Niebuhr, age 94 of Clinton, passed away Thursday, April 21, 2022 at the Alverno. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM on Saturday, April 30, 2022 at St. John Lutheran Church. Visitation will be from 10:00 AM until the time of the service Saturday at the church. Burial will be in Oakland Cemetery. Pallbearers will be her grandchildren. The Pape Funeral Home is assisting the family.
Helen was born in Clinton on July 20, 1927, the daughter of Peter and Esther (Nielsen) Schmidt. She graduated from Clinton High School and attended Mt. St. Clare College. Helen married Eugene Niebuhr on September 4, 1949 in Clinton. Gene passed away on March 13, 2021. Helen had been employed as a Secretary at Clinton Foods and later as a library assistant at Washington Middle School. She was active in Elijah Buell PTA, serving as the President, and a Girl Scout leader. She was a very active member at St. John Lutheran Church serving with the Ladies Aid Society, and had also volunteered with Agatha Auxiliary at Jane Lamb Hospital. Helen enjoyed attending her grandchildren’s activities, reading, feeding the birds and following the Iowa Hawkeyes.
Helen is survived by 3 children; Barbara (Dan) Jepsen of Port Bryon, IL, Larry (Pam) Niebuhr of Eldridge, and Jeffrey (Sharon) Niebuhr of Clinton; a son-in-law, Kent (Jane) Widmer of Iowa City; 8 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Gene; a daughter, Pam; a grandson, Joel and 3 brothers, Harold, Kenneth, and Marvin. My deepest sympathies with the passing of Helen. I am a 48 year old and I remember her quite fondly from the library at Washington. She would save books for me and be truly happy when she saw me. It meant a lot then and it still does.
