11/28/1928 - 5/3/2018

Clinton, IA

William (Bill) M. Lackermann, age 89, of Clinton, passed away on Thursday, May 3, 2018 at his home surrounded by family. A Mass will be celebrated at 10:30 AM on Monday, May 7, 2018 at Prince of Peace Parish. Visitation will be from 3:00 to 6:00 P.M. Sunday at the Pape Funeral Home. Burial will be in St. Irenaeus Calvary Cemetery. Casket bearers will be his grandchildren. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be sent to either Prince of Peace School—Bill was a big supporter of Catholic education— or to Prince of Peace Parish to help plant trees on the church grounds (Bill was an active member of the Clinton branch of Trees Forever). Bill was born in Antigo, Wisconsin on November 28, 1928, the son of William A. and Emma (Schwartz) Lackermann. Bill served with the US Army as a paratrooper with the 82nd Airborne Division for two years. He received a Bachelor of Science (BS) degree in Engineering from Marquette University in Milwaukee. Later in life, he received a Masters of Business Administration (MBA) degree from the University of Iowa. Bill first was employed with International Minerals and Chemicals (IMC). In the early 1960’s, IMC brought Bill to the Clinton area where he worked at the Nitrin fertilizer plant just south of Clinton on the Illinois side of the Mississippi. During a flood of the Mississippi in the 1960’s, IMC had to fly Bill and other IMC employees from the Clinton airport to the Cordova drag strip (temporarily converted into an airfield) to get to work! In the 1970’s, Bill was also employed at Clinton Corn Processing Company. In the mid-1970’s, he purchased a local excavating company which he owned and operated for 10 years. He spent the final years of his working life with Clausen Hardware. Bill married Josephine (Jo) V. Barr on August 22, 1955 in Chicago, IL. Bill and Jo had many years of happy married life and raised five children in Clinton. The saddest day of his life was when Josephine passed away unexpectedly on October 14, 2006. In the years since Josephine’s death, this void in Bill’s life was filled with love and support from his immediate family (particularly, Greg, Chris, Sarah, Will and Julie), from his extended family (Mors, Ipsens, Barrs and many other too numerous to name since these are large Catholic families), his friends in the Clinton community and his care-givers in the later years of his life (particularly Barb). Bill and Josephine were members of St. Patrick Catholic Church and sent their children to St. Patrick’s School (and later to St. Mary’s High School). Bill served on the Parish Council and was also active in Boy Scouting. After the Catholic parishes were consolidated, Bill was a member of Prince of Peace Parish. He served six years on the Clinton City Council, representing the 3rd Ward. Bill enjoyed fishing, hunting and playing bridge. Bill was a life-long fan of the Green Bay Packers and although two of his daughters (Ellen and Laura) became Chicago Bear fans, he did not disown them. Over the years he enjoyed a spirited rivalry with members of the Seattle-based “Bear Church” (headed up by his daughter, Ellen). Two of Bill’s cherished values were the importance of family and hospitality. His door was never locked and he loved to welcome both new and old to his home. For example, for over fifty years, Bill hosted Thanksgiving at his home. Both his family and his extended family would come to Clinton to celebrate. Bill loved to make potato dumplings and turkey stuffing (using his mother’s traditional recipe). There were many Thanksgiving traditions including: Wednesday evening dinner at Rastrelli’s; attendance at church before you could eat on Thursday; walks though the cemetery after the feast; etc. Bill’s home was covered with group pictures taken annually. The Lackermann Thanksgiving tradition drew as many as 103 relatives from outside the area and gave the Clinton economy a boost with motel stays and “Black Friday” shopping in local stores. Bill is survived by five children, William Lackermann Jr. and his wife Jan of Des Moines, Greg Lackermann and his wife Christine of Clinton, Dr. Ellen Lackermann and her husband Neal Stephenson of Seattle, WA, Laura Lackermann Divane of Illinois and Linda Lackermann-Fletcher and her husband Robert of Waterville, Maine; 13 grandchildren and three great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother Earl and three sisters, Evelyn Henderson, Carol Fraley and Geraldine Wells.

Visitation will be from 3:00 to 6:00 P.M. Sunday at the Pape Funeral Home. Burial will be in St. Irenaeus Calvary Cemetery.

A Mass will be celebrated at 10:30 AM on Monday, May 7, 2018 at Prince of Peace Parish.
