John R. Sawvell, Sr., of Clinton, Iowa passed away on Monday, October 5, 2020. Cremation rites have been accorded. Pape Funeral Home is assisting the family. A Celebration of Life Service will be held on Sunday, October 25th from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m at Eagle Point Park and burial will follow at Union Cemetery. John was born in Prairie Du Chien, Wisconsin, the son of William Sawvell and Marcella and Hugh Weaver. John married Kathleen Huilman Nov. 13, 1971, at St. Patrick's Church in Delmar. John worked for Chicago Northwestern now known as Union Pacific Railroad from April of 1971 until he retired in 2010 after 39 years of service. He was a member of the Brotherhood of Maintenance of Way Local #1152 and Loyal Order of Moose and volunteered at the Children's Discovery Center.
John enjoyed his retirement spending time with his family and friends, particularly with his grandchildren. His door was always open, and he was happy to help anyone who asked. He enjoyed driving to visit relatives in Wisconsin. His hobbies included fishing, hunting, boating, tinkering with vehicles and driving his 57’ Chevy.
He is survived by his children, Shawn Judd (Brent Struck), John Sawvell, Jr. and Mickie Sawvell (Tyra Jacobs), all of Clinton; six grandchildren, Abigail, Kaitlynn, Allison, Ian, Macynn, Tyler, and Bentlee; his siblings, Frances (Eugene) Hynek of Janesville, WI, Marion Kramer of Clinton, Ia, Diana (Kenneth) Jewell of Camanche, Ia, Deb Holmquist of Savanna, Ill, and Margaret Weaver of Clinton, Ia. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Kathy on November 3, 2011, his parents, and two brothers Mickie C. Sawvell and Robert Weaver.
