Eugene R. “Charlie” Bormann, age 78 of Preston, passed away Monday, September 21, 2020 at his home with his loving family surrounding him.  A Mass will be celebrated at 11:00 AM on Friday, September 25th at St. Joseph’s Church in Preston.  Visitation will be from 4:00 to 7:00 PM Thursday at the church where a rosary will be recited following the visitation.  Visitation will also occur from 10:00 AM until the time of the Mass on Friday at the church.  Due to Covid-19 the family would appreciate that those coming to the services please wear a mask.  Burial will follow in St. Joseph’s Cemetery, Preston.  Pallbearers will be Andreas and Alden Haffar, Keaton and Drew Bormann, Matthew Marvin, Doug Bormann, Floyd Steines and Brian Marburger. Honorary pallbearers will be Landon Bormann, Jacob Marvin and Lucas Bormann.  The Pape Funeral Home is assisting the family.

 

     Gene was born in rural Preston on March 13, 1942, the son of Jacob and Genevieve (Roling) Bormann.  He graduated from Marquette High School in Bellevue.  Gene married Janice Banowetz on February 8, 1964 in Petersville.  Gene farmed his early life and retired after many years with Farm Service.  He was a member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church and the Iowa Umpires Association.  He loved spending time with his family and grandchildren.  He enjoyed playing cards, fishing, gardening and playing fast pitch softball.  He umpired high school baseball, softball and volleyball games as well as umpiring at Geno’s for many years.  He was an avid baseball and sports fan.  He took pride in making wood crafts in his woodshop and he always took the time to chat with friends.

 

     Gene is survived by his wife, Janice; 5 children, Annette (Aziz) Haffar of West Des Moines, Ron (Lynn) Bormann of Waterford, WI, Neil (Angie) Bormann of Grimes, IA, Sherry (Paul) Marvin of DeWitt and Nathan (Jennifer) Bormann of Miles; 15 grandchildren, Andreas and Alden Haffar, Keaton, Mariah, Landon and Adelynn Bormann, Layne and Drew Bormann, Danielle, Matthew, Nicole, Leah and Jacob Marvin and Lucas and Kennedy Bormann; 2 sisters, Beatrice Gavin of Maquoketa and Gladys Tebbe of Dubuque.  He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother, Orville and a sister, Joan Smithers.  Online condolences may be left at www.papefh.com.
