For many years he was a volunteer scuba diver for the surrounding area assigned to task such as searching for snowmobiles or cars that may have fallen in the water or through the ice, searching for bodies, or items lost in the water. He told of a time when some boats had been stolen from Bulgers Hollow and were sunk by the spillway and he was on the team to retrieve them. When the Interstate 80 Bridge was being built, Charles was hired by McCarthy Contractors to go down in the Mississippi and find tools that had been dropped in.
