Michael J. Nixon, age 72, of Clinton, passed away Wednesday, July 26, 2017 at the Alverno Health Care Facility following a 10 month battle with gastric cancer. A gathering of family and friends will be held from 10:00 to 11:30AM on Friday, August 4, 2017 at Prince of Peace parish. Mass will be celebrated at 11:30 AM with burial at a later date. Mike was born in Clinton, IA on June 24, 1945, the son of Ervin and Virginia (Young) Nixon. He graduated from St. Mary’s High School in 1964 and from Northeast Missouri State University in 1969 with a BS Degree in Education. While at St. Mary’s, Mike was featured in Sports Illustrated’s Faces in the Crowd for his football talents. On August 27, 1988, at St. Mary’s Church in Clinton, Mike married Syd Howe, who he met in college. He taught physical education at St. Patrick’s and St. Mary’s grade schools and St. Mary’s High School for 6 years. Mike was responsible for developing and coordinating the first physical education program for the two grade schools and also for establishing a girls’ extra- curricular sports program, grades 5-8, which was instrumental in the creation of a city wide program for girls. He coached all girls’ high school sports in addition to assisting in boys’ football and track. Mike was later employed as a manager at Pizza Hut and assistant manager at Happy Joes and Famous Recipe. He also worked at Hawkeye Chemical for 10 years and retired after 5 years with Mercy Hospital. Mike was a member of Prince of Peace parish and the Eagles Club. He was an avid Notre Dame fan making an annual trip to South Bend with his buddies to watch a game. Traveling, trains, music, having coffee, socializing with friends and seeing former students were activities he enjoyed. Mike is survived by his wife Syd; two sisters, Juleen Barrows of Camanche and Therese (Roger) Shaw of Clinton; a brother-in-law Don (Beverly) Armstrong of Fulton, IL, sisters-in-law, Colleen Nixon of Clinton, Tracey (Chuck) Mohns of West Des Moines, IA and Lindsay (Brad) Willcox of West Des Moines, IA; his mother-in-law, Ruth Howe of West Des Moines, IA and many nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother, Gary Nixon and a sister, Kay Armstrong. The family would like to send a special thank you to staff at the Alverno and Hospice Compassus, especially his niece and hospice nurse, Deb Vilmont. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Prince of Peace Sports Programs in Mike’s name.
