Donald D. Gray, 76 of Preston, died Thursday August 2, 2018 at the Alverno Healthcare Facility. A funeral service will be held at 11:00 AM on Monday, August 6th at the Calvary Lutheran Church in Sabula. Visitation will be from 1:00 – 4:00 PM at the church on Sunday August 5th and from 10:00 AM until the service hour on Monday. Burial will be at Sterling Cemetery in Sabula.
Don was born June 10, 1942 to Lorraine and Cecelia (Lawrence) Gray in Savanna, IL. He was a 1960 graduate of Miles High School. Don married Cleo Ruchotzke on June 17, 1962 at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Preston, IA. Cleo passed away in 2017. He was engaged in farming, worked for Agri-King, the Jackson County Welcome Center, Swiss Valley and TM Woodworks for 11 years. In 2001, Don and his wife Cleo built a new home in Preston, IA.
Don was a director of the Miles Coop Telephone Board for 22 years. He was a chartered member of the Miles Area Lions Club for 20 years. Don received the Melvin Jones Award. He transferred to the Preston Lions Club and had been a member ever since. Throughout his years in Lions, he maintained perfect attendance. Don served two terms on the East Central School Board in Miles, IA. He was a member of Calvary Lutheran Church in Sabula. Don loved working with wood and took pride in keeping his yard looking great. He was a wonderful caregiver for his wife, Cleo. Don loved spending time with his grandchildren, family and friends.
Don is survived by his daughter Nathalie (Scott) Schertz of Lacon, IL; daughter-in-law Renee(Kueter) Gray of McFarland, WI; four grandchildren, Cassondra (Michael) Shumway, Alyssa Gray, Lukas Gray and Michael (Cristen) Gray; a step great grandson Nathan Martin; a great granddaughter Emmaline Shumway; a great grandson Miles Donald Gray; two brothers, David Gray of Arlington, TX and Tom (Sandy) Gray of Miles, IA; sisters in law Caroline, Linda and Mardella Ruchotzke; John and Madge Ruchotzke and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife Cleo; a son Aaron Gray and a niece Audra Gray. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to the American Diabetic Association, Calvary Lutheran Church in Sabula, Camp Courageous, or Lion’s Club International.
